A 17-year-old girl from Texas died June 16 after falling out of a tree while hiking a trail at Cascadia County Park east of Sweet Home.

The hiker, who was not named, was hiking with with her father on the Soda Creek Falls Trail when she “jumped up or climbed a tree to hang from a branch approximately 6 inches in diameter,” according to the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.

“The branch broke, causing her to fall onto another log with the branch falling on top of her,” the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office said the girl eventually lost consciousness. Her father tried to drag her out to where he could get her help.

Bystanders assisted with CPR until the Sweet Home Fire Department arrived and took over. The girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

Linn County Sheriff Michelle Duncan offered “their sincere condolences and thoughts to the family during this difficult time,” a news release said.
