Two campers were found dead at a remote campground of Isle Royale National Park, the National Park Service said on June 10.
The park service said the individuals have not been identified. The the cause of death is undetermined at this time.
The park service received reports of two dead people at a backcountry campground in the park at about 4 p.m. Sunday, June 8, the park service said in a news release on June 10.
Rangers hiked about 11 miles overnight to the site and reached the scene the morning of Monday, June 9, and confirmed finding two bodies.
An investigation into the incident remains ongoing. Ground and aviation resources started responding to the scene on Monday, June 9, the release says.
Camping on Isle Royale
Isle Royale has 36 campgrounds across the island, the park website notes.
Campsites are accessible only by foot or watercraft and offer tent sites, a water source, and outhouses. Some campgrounds on Lake Superior offer shelters and picnic tables.
Permits are required, regardless of group size or method of travel, for all overnight stays at campgrounds, cross country sites, docks, or at anchor, the park service said.
Earlier this year, the park service announced updated food storage rules that aimed to reduce encounters with animals.
The park service also makes note that basic emergency services are available on the island, but contacting rangers can be difficult.
“Emergency response and evacuation take time, requiring you to rely on your own skills and equipment,” the park service said. “Cell phone service is unreliable; do not depend on it.”
