Al Mac’s Diner, Sagres named among most historic Mass. restaurants by Chowhound

A couple of Fall River’s storied restaurants have been recognized by foodie site Chowhound, earning a place on the website’s list of the “13 Most Historic Restaurants in Massachusetts.”

The list, written by Hunter Reis, includes iconic places like The Wayside Inn, Union Oyster House, and Parker’s Restaurant at the Omni Parker Hotel.

Representing Fall River on Chowhound’s list are Al Mac’s Diner, and Sagres Restaurant.

Al Mac’s Diner, 135 President Ave., is instantly recognizable with its landmark sign and “justly famous” declaration.

“In a city otherwise known for the Lizzie Borden murders and the chow mein sandwich,” Reis wrote, Al Mac’s is an “integral part” of Fall River’s community.

With Al Mac’s representing breakfast, Sagres Restaurant is representing dinner.

Fall River’s oldest Portuguese restaurant, Sagres, 177 Columbia St., dishes up a Portuguese steak “that is hard to beat,” Reis wrote.

“The best Portuguese food in America can be found in southern Massachusetts, and that’s partly thanks to Sagres,” Reis wrote. “This white tablecloth, old-school Portuguese restaurant opened in Fall River in 1976, starting an international dining trend that has stayed with the city ever since.”

Sagres acknowledged the article in a Facebook post, saying, “Since 1976, our mission has been to serve authentic, comforting Portuguese cuisine to the community we love. It’s an honor to be recognized among the great food traditions of southern Massachusetts — and to be part of what makes this area so special.”

They concluded by saying, “We’re proud of where we come from, and we look forward to sharing our table with old friends and new for many years to come.”
