Charges include rioting, unlawful assembly, failure to disperse, obstructing a highway, obstructing emergency responders, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Kenton County Commonwealth’s Attorney Rob Sanders said his office will be investigating the incident. He said the county takes the safety of its officers very seriously and that he will review all the body camera footage from the incident.

Videos circulating on social media show officers subduing multiple people to the ground during the protest.

Lawyer Benjamin T.D. Pugh, who is representing some of the protesters, said at least three of the protesters were hospitalized.

He said the Kenton County detention center has strict rules about accepting people with injuries.

What led to the arrests on the Roebling Bridge

The arrests by the Covington Police Department came during a rally held in support of Imam Ayman Soliman, an Egyptian immigrant and former Cincinnati Children’s chaplain, who U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained on July 9.

During the protest, which began in Cincinnati, a large group of people crossed the Roebling Bridge shortly after 8 p.m., heading toward Covington.

Covington police said in a news release that officers initially attempted to connect with the protest’s organizer, but were “met with open hostility and threatening behavior.”

Police said that after warnings were issued to the group to disperse, several people were taken into custody.
