2 Michigan politicians report bomb threats targeting where they live

Must read

State Sen. Jeremy Moss, D-Southfield, said that a bomb threat was made against him Sept. 11, making him the second prominent Michigan Democratic politician to report a bomb threat targeting the place where he lives on Sept. 11 after Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II said a threat was made on his home.

“Yesterday, I received a detailed and specific message threatening me at my home with a bomb,” Moss said in a statement released Friday, Sept. 12. Moss expressed gratitude for local and Michigan State Police who responded. Moss is currently running for an Oakland County-based seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Southfield Police Department officials didn’t immediately respond to voicemails left by the Free Press Sept. 12. But Michigan State Police Communications and Outreach Division Director Shanon Banner confirmed that MSP’s Bomb Squad responded to the pair of incidents targeting where Gilchrist and Moss live, but did not provide additional details on what transpired.

Both Gilchrist and Moss noted that the threats came in the aftermath of the slaying of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at a college campus in Utah on Sept. 10, and condemned political violence in the U.S.

“This current political environment is untenable. In the past few days, I’ve experienced a noticeable influx of bigoted, aggressive messages directed at my office and social media inboxes,” Moss said in his statement. “Democracy relies on the freedom to speak, debate, and disagree without fear of violent retribution. I won’t be intimidated from standing up and speaking out on behalf of Michiganders. Our voice and our vote are the most effective tools to end this toxicity in our politics.”

Gilchrist in a statement Sept. 11 echoed Moss: “We cannot tolerate political violence. We cannot excuse it. We cannot normalize it. We have to push through this and do the work to do better,” he said. Gilchrist is currently running to serve as Michigan’s next governor.
