Drivers around Fort Collins may see new mobile speed radar camera units starting in June.
Two mobile speed radar cameras have been placed in Fort Collins. As of June 10, one was located in the 900 block of E. Prospect Road and the other in the 900 block of S. College Avenue, Fort Collins Police Services spokesperson J Gilmore.
These camera units will periodically be moved around Fort Collins within designated speed corridors, Gilmore said. Drivers caught by these cameras traveling 11 mph or more over the speed limit will be issued warnings through June 30. Beginning July 1, $40 citations will be issued for speed violations.
Speeding violations between 11 and 24 mph over the speed limit are civil penalties, not traffic infractions, and violations will not result in points on the driver’s license, Gilmore said. Speeding violations of 25 mph or more over the speed limit are traffic tickets, and police officers will investigate those violations captured on these cameras and violations will be served to drivers by an officer.
Speed corridors have been designated throughout Fort Collins based on factors including vehicle crashes, speeding and citizen complaints, Gilmore said. The speed and red-light camera systems at intersections in the city are located within those designated speed corridors, and mobile Jeep speed radar systems are also set up in speed corridors.
These camera units will be placed throughout the city in tandem with the mobile Jeep speed radar systems, Gilmore said.
The six intersections in the city with cameras that can catch red-light and speeding violations are:
Drake Road and South College Avenue
South Timberline Road and East Harmony Road
South Shields Street and West Harmony Road
South Lemay Avenue and East Drake Road
South Shields Street and West Prospect Road
South Shields Street and West Mulberry Road
Signs warning drivers that radar cameras are ahead are posted as vehicles are entering the speed corridors and another sign will be posted right before the camera itself, Gilmore said.
Warnings and violations will be sent to the vehicle’s registered owner address on file with the Colorado Department of Revenue. Violation notices contain pictures of the vehicle, license plate and driver. People can choose to pay or contest the violation.
