Hurricane Gabrielle, which rapidly spun up into a powerful Category 4 hurricane Monday, Sept. 22, has passed Bermuda and is expected to weaken as it moves into the western Atlantic, according to the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center.
However, the previously sluggish hurricane season is picking up fast with the NHC watching four systems, two of which may become tropical depressions. One, Invest 93L, could threaten the Bahamas and potentially the North Carolina coast this weekend, AccuWeather forecasters said.
Invest 94L, several hundred miles to the east, is expected to bring heavy rainfall and gusty winds into Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands tonight and Wednesday and could become a tropical depression near the Bahamas late this week, according to an NHC forecast.
