By India Today Web Desk: England captain Ben Stokes confirmed that fast bowler Mark Wood will replace injured Liam Livingstone in the 2nd Test of the ongoing 3-match series against Pakistan. The action will get underway in Multan from Friday, December 9 as England are 1-0 up after winning the opener in Rawalpindi.
Mark Wood will take the place of Liam Livingstone, who played as an extra batter in Rawalpindi. The white-ball expert picked up a knee injury on his Test debut and has returned home.
Meanwhile, Ben Stokes also confirmed that Ollie Pope will continue keeping wickets for England. Ben Foakes, who was unavailable for selection in the first Test, has recovered from illness but he misses out.
WHY NO FOAKES?
Stokes said it was a tough call to not pick Ben Foakes, whom he rated as the best wicketkeeper going around but added that the decision was taken, keeping in mind the team combination and the batting cushion that Pope would give.
“I’ll still keep saying that he (Foakes) is the best keeper in the world,” Stokes said while addressing the press on the eve of the Multan Test.
“It must sound silly to not be picking him but you got to see the conditions we face here. Pakistan is a very hard place to come and win.
“Adding Mark Wood into the side gives us the best opportunity to take 20 wickets. That’s what we came here to do. We came here to try and win the game of cricket and not be conservative.” he added.
Will Jacks retained his place after a fine Test debut wherein the off-spinner picked 6 wickets. He will form the 2-man spin attack along with left-arm spinner Jack Leach.
