NEW DELHI/MUMBAI: Study humanities or sciences, every college student across India will now receive a primer with essential courses aimed at “broadening” their “intellectual experience” and thus making their education more rounded. Moreover, apart from the multiple entry and exit options made available to students, candidates can re-enter within three years and start again where they left off, but complete their degree in the maximum time frame of seven years.
As per the new curriculum and credit framework for the four-year-undergraduate programme to be announced by the University Grants Commission (UGC) on Monday, all undergraduate students will have to undergo three introductory-level courses in broad areas like natural and physical sciences, mathematics, statistics and computer applications, commerce and management, humanities and social sciences and library, information and media sciences.
That apart, value-added courses common to all UG students include understanding India, environmental science, digital and technological solutions and health and wellness, yoga education, sports and fitness. As per UGC, higher education institutions can implement the curriculum from the 2022-23 academic session itself. And, students already enrolled and pursuing a three-year UG programme as per the existing Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) are eligible to pursue a four-year undergraduate programme.
Students who complete a four-year UG degree with a minimum of 160 credits will be awarded UG (Honours) degree. Students who secure 75% of marks and above in the first six semesters and wish to undertake research at the undergraduate level can choose a research stream in the fourth year. They should do a research project and will be awarded UG (Honours with Research) degree. For the existing students under the CBCS system, UGC suggests that university may provide bridge courses (including online) to enable them to transition to CCFUGP.
