By India Today Web Desk: England and Manchester City full-back Kyle Walker has backed striker Harry Kane, calling him a big character and a leader. Kane missed a crucial penalty as England fell to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of defending champions France in the quarter-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Walker backed his captain, saying it takes a big character to step up and take the penalty in such situations.

“That takes a big character to step up on both occasions. He’s a big character and a leader,” said Walker.

Walker said that he has been playing alongside Kane since he was 15 years old and knows that his mentality will remain the same even after missing that penalty kick.

“I’ve had the pleasure of playing with H since he was 15. His mentality has stayed the same. I’m not just saying that because of the situation. It doesn’t change, it stays the same,” Walker added.

He said that the whole team is backing Kane and hopes that the rest of the country can also stand in support for the England captain.

“I bet everyone in the country would’ve wanted him on the penalty. You win some, you lose some. He scored many crucial penalties. I can assure you there are 25 lads in the dressing room behind him. And I should hope the country is behind him, supporting him in a difficult moment,” said Walker.

Finally, the Englishman said Kane will be back on the biggest stage because that is the kind of player he is.

“He will be back because that is the player he is,” Walker added.

After England’s loss, Kane took to Twitter to say that he was absolutely gutted and takes responsibility for the result against France.

“Absolutely gutted. We’ve given it everything and it’s come down to a small detail which I take responsibility for. There’s no hiding from it, it hurts and it’ll take some time to get over it but that’s part of sport,” Kane posted on Twitter.
