‘Really poor!’: Harry Maguire SLAMS referee Wilton Sampaio for his performance in England’s defeat to France, insisting the Brazilian ‘never gave us anything’ after Aurelien Tchouameni’s opener was allowed to stand

Harry Maguire has slammed referee Wilton Pereira Sampaio for his performance during England‘s World Cup defeat to France.

England bowed out of the competition after suffering a 2-1 defeat on Saturday, but France’s opening goal, scored by Aurelien Tchouameni, has been widely criticised after Sampaio failed to give what appeared to be an obvious foul on Bukayo Saka in the build-up.

Speaking to BBC after the game, Maguire branded the performance ‘really poor’, before insisting ‘he never gave us anything’ in the game.

‘Really poor. Very poor’, Maguire began. ‘From minute one, five, six fouls in the first 15 minutes, not one yellow card.

‘For me it’s a foul for the first goal on Bukayo. I can’t really go into explain how bad his performance really was. I don’t want to go into too much cause I’ll end up getting fined, but it was really really poor.

‘His decisions throughout the game, not just the big decisions. Even the big decisions were wrong, he never gave us anything, but throughout the game he was really poor.’

England were awarded two penalties in the game, but the second only after a VAR referral following a push on Mason Mount.

Harry Kane was denied another in the first half when he was tripped by Dayot Upamecano, and frustrations from the England players were clear to see throughout the match.

Sampaio, 40, was only a VAR official at the 2018 tournament, and has not attracted criticism for all the wrong reasons.

Kane scored the first of the two penalties, but fired the second one over the bar, much to the surprise of many.

Maguire refused to portion any blame on his captain, however, instead opting to praise the Spurs forward.

‘We all know H, he’s a big character, he’s our captain, we follow him, he’s been magnificent ever since I’ve stepped into make my debut, he’s been here, he’s been the leader, he’s welcomed me, and he’ll pick himself up’, Maguire said.

‘He’s a world class striker and when you’re taking as many penalties as he does in a season he’s going to miss some. He’ll be hurt and disappointed, as are all of us, [but] of course we’re not blaming him. Ultimately we weren’t clinical enough during the game.
