The incident took place on Saturday when Bahada Murmu (45) and his wife Dhani (35) were sleeping outside their house after having their dinner. Some miscreants allegedly entered their house around midnight and hit the couple on their heads with sharp weapons. Afterwards, they fled from the spot, leaving behind the couple bleeding profusely.

Their daughter heard them screaming and rushed outside to find her parents in a pool of blood. She immediately informed her uncle about the incident. The relative said Bahada’s daughter called at around 12:30 am to inform him about the incident. “I took my motorcycle and reached the spot and saw my sister still breathing, while their daughter was weeping near the body of her father,” said Kisan Marandi.

A police team arrived at the spot and sent the bodies for an autopsy.

Keonjhar Superintendent of Police Mitrabhanu Mahapatra told PTI, “It appears that suspicion of practising witchcraft was behind the murders.”

One person has been detained in connection with the case. Further investigation is underway.
