13 rescued after raft overturns in Chenab river | India News – Times of India

JAMMU: A raft carrying 13 persons turned turtle after hitting a pillar of a bridge in the Chenab river in J&K’s Reasi district on Monday, but locals and rescue teams acted promptly and rescued everyone.
All the 13 people on the raft, including five women, who fell into the river, were wearing life jackets, which gave raft operators and rescuers enough time to pull them out safely, although the strong currents had carried them to some distance, police said.
According to sources, a group of 22 devotees from Bareilly, Aligarh and Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh were going to the cave shrine of Shiv Khori in Reasi after offering prayers at Vaishno Devi.
On the way, they had a brief halt at Baradari, a river rafting point, where they decided to go for the adventure activity.
One of the devotees said the group was divided into two, with 13 of them in one raft and nine in another. “Mata Vaishno Devi and Lord Shiva saved us. It took the rescuers over half-an-hour to save us. We fell into the water and drifted quite a distance due to the strong currents, but we held each other’s hands and stayed together,” Archana told media persons.
Appreciating the locals and the rescuers, another person, Shailesh Saxena, said, “We were holding each other’s hands and praying to the almighty.”
