Three people were rescued from an overturned boat in the Chesapeake Bay on Saturday.
Around 5 p.m., fire and rescue personnel from St. Mary’s County were dispatched about 300 yards offshore in the Chesapeake Bay for three victims stranded in the water, according to Maryland State Police.
A state police aviation crew stationed in California, Maryland, overheard the report dispatched on the radio and self-launched after coordinating with St. Mary’s officials to assist with locating and rescuing the stranded people, according to police. The crew was requested to conduct an aerial hoist rescue due to the extended arrival time of the closest fire rescue board, police said.
The Augusta Westland W139 helicopter hovered over the three people, lowered a rescue basket and lifted one person into the aircraft, according to a news release from police.
Police said a fireboat from Calvert County then arrived on the scene and was directed to rescue the remaining two people stranded in the water.
According to police, the airlifted victim did not require medical evacuation to a hospital and was offloaded to an awaiting ambulance and family.
