A 40-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a hit-and-run on Milwaukee’s northwest side, according to the Milwaukee Police Department.
The crash happened around 8:13 p.m. June 7. The motorcyclist was traveling north on North 76th Street and collided with a vehicle traveling south and turning left on West Florist Avenue.
The motorcyclist was pronounced dead on the scene from injuries sustained during the crash. The driver of the second vehicle is unknown and fled the scene, police say. The investigation is ongoing.
The hit-and-run was the second fatal crash of the day on June 7. A 30-year-old was killed in an early morning crash on West State Street and North Sixth Street. A 20-year-old driver was taken into custody.
At least 18 people in Milwaukee have died from injuries sustained in traffic crashes so far this year, according to data from the police department’s Traffic Safety Unit.
Over the last five years, Wisconsin has seen an average of 2,000 motorcycle crashes with 1,700 injuries and 100 fatalities per year, according to the state Department of Transportation.
Especially in the summer months, the DOT reminds drivers to look twice for motorcycles — many crashes happen during left turns or lane changes.
