5 kids hospitalized, shooter ‘contained’ after shooting at Minneapolis Catholic church, school

Aug. 27—Police are responding to a shooting Wednesday morning at a church and school in south Minneapolis. They say “the shooter is contained.”

A spokesperson for Children’s Minnesota said around 10 a.m. that five children were admitted “to the hospital for care.”

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz posted on social media just after 9 a.m. that he had “been briefed on a shooting at Annunciation Catholic School and will continue to provide updates as we get more information. The BCA and State Patrol are on scene. I’m praying for our kids and teachers whose first week of school was marred by this horrific act of violence.” The FBI also is on the scene.

Annunciation Catholic School is located on West 54th Street, just east of Lyndale Avenue.

Minneapolis police said in an alert: “There is no active threat to the community at this time. The shooter is contained. The public is advised to stay away from the area to allow emergency personnel to help victims.”

Police said there is a reunification zone at the Annunciation School at 525 W. 54th St.

Parents were seen walking their children away from the church school at around 10 a.m.

Emergency responders also brought some of the injured to HCMC in downtown Minneapolis. A reporter heard a woman frantically asking sheriffs’ deputies for help to find her daughter at the hospital.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey posted a statement that he was “monitoring reports of horrific violence in South Minneapolis. I’m in touch with Chief O’Hara and our emergency response team has been activated. We will share more information as soon as we can. Please give our officers the space they need to respond to the situation.”

A neighbor said he and his wife started hearing gunshots at 8:30 a.m. and then heard vehicles converging on the scene shortly after.

Details on the circumstances of the shooting were not immediately available.
