Eastern Bank and Brockton-born HarborOne Bank aim to close 13 branches between them as part of their merger. That would leave 126 branch locations for the merged company in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Pending regulatory approval, the 13 branches will likely begin closing in February 2026, said Eastern Bank President and Chief Operating Officer Quincy Miller. He said the banks are consolidating where branches are close to each other.

A four-year-old boy who drowned in an above-ground pool at a Brockton residence on Sunday, July 13, has died, according to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office. The fatal drowning occurred at a residence on Sunset Avenue shortly before 3 p.m. Sunday, July 13. He was transported to a Boston area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

At approximately 2:49 p.m., Sunday, July 13, 2025, Brockton Police responded to a report of a possible drowning involving a child on Sunset Avenue. Brewster Ambulance transported Hendrix Cooley-Walker, 4, to a Boston hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries at approximately 1:30 a.m. Monday, July 14, according to the DA’s office.

Two Bridgewater residents are being charged with animal cruelty after they left their two dogs to die in a 130-degree car on Wednesday, July 16, according to police. A 59-year-old and 32-year-old, both from Bridgewater, are accused of leaving their two doodles, aged 2 and 4, in a hot car for more than 90 minutes without opening the windows or putting the air conditioning on, according to Police Chief Christopher D. Delmonte.

Homeless man who Bridgewater rallied around has died. Who was Greg Bobst?
Greg Bobst, a well-known figure in Bridgewater often seen around the center of town in a hockey jersey, has died. Many residents knew who he was and would stop and chat with him. Bobst spent most of his time in Bridgewater Central Square, according to police, where he was a familiar face to the community who cared about him. Bridgewater Police Lt. Scott Hile said people all over town knew who Bobst was and checked in on him.

Brockton approves first accessory dwelling unit. Will ADUs change Brockton?
Brockton okayed the city’s first “accessory dwelling unit” under a state law meant to spur housing construction. The planning board said “yes” to an 802-square-foot addition to a single-family home at 438 Ash St. “This is the test case, I suppose,” engineer Scott Faria, vice president of Brockton’s J.K. Holmgren Engineering, told the planning board. City officials say this is the first ADU plan to make its way through Brockton’s bureaucracy. Expect more.
