Must read

Six officers from two police departments and two sheriff’s offices shot and killed a man on Interstate 80 in the early hours of April 15.

Vonderrick Rayford, 51, of Milwaukee was pulled over for excessive speeding around 1:30 a.m. near the Earlham 104 exit on April 15 after the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office received a traffic complaint.

Rayford opened fire at a Dallas County deputy, according to an April 16 news release from Adam Infante, Dallas County Sheriff. Additional law enforcement officers responded to assist the Dallas County officers on the scene after a standoff occurred.

Rayford shot at those officers from the Adair County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol and Adel Police Department when they arrived, according to the release. They returned fire, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

An April 18 news release from the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office identified the six law enforcement personnel who fired their weapons at Rayford:

Deputies Jacob Spurrell, Eric Grimm and Drew Hurley from the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office; Officer Joel Gummert from the Adel Police Department; Officer Shane Martinson from the Stuart Police Department; and Deputy Tyler DeFrancisco from the Adair County Sheriff’s Office.

All have been placed on administrative leave, which is protocol in use-of-force cases.
