9-year-old student had a handgun on West Ottawa Public School bus

PORT SHELDON TWP. — A nine-year-old elementary school student was in possession of a handgun on a West Ottawa Public School bus, according to a press release from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.

OCSO deputies learned that the same student was in possession of ammunition on the school bus on May 6. Further investigation revealed that the student had displayed the handgun on the school bus on May 1.

The gun was not believed to have been loaded. School staff and students were not in danger. There are no on-going safety concerns with the student

The student was turned over to his family as investigators continue to work with school staff.  Detectives will also consult with the Ottawa County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office about whether criminal charges are applicable.
