Will it be warmer or cooler in Louisville this fall? What the Old Farmer’s Almanac says

Must read

Persistent heat and humidity from yet another warm summer may exit the Louisville area by the time fall officially begins Sept. 22, though not all forecasts show a departure from above average temperatures.

Temperatures in the Ohio Valley region, which includes Louisville, are expected to see below-average temperatures this fall, according to a July 11 outlook published by The Old Farmer’s Almanac.

In addition to jackets and jeans potentially coming back, the cooler temperatures might mean the red, orange, brown and yellow leaves common in fall foliage may appear in Louisville earlier than usual this year.

“September and October will be cooler and drier than normal across the (Ohio Valley) region,” Farmers Almanac forecasters stated.

For September specifically, forecasters anticipate “warm periods with scattered showers” early in the month. Louisville could see a cooling trend by the middle of September.

As for October, Ohio Valley cities could experience an average temperature of 56 degrees, or two degrees lower than normal, according to the Almanac. There may be a “mix of showers and sunshine with shifting temps — warm early, cooling mid-month, then slightly warmer to end.”

But don’t rush to get the pumpkin carving knife just yet. Data from the National Weather’s Climate Prediction Center shows above-average temperatures for Kentucky, and most of the country, from August through October. Chances for La Niña conditions, in which temperatures are warmer than usual in the South and cooler in northern states, are increasingly possible in the fall and winter months, NWS climatologists stated in a July 10 update.

During the fall of 2024, Louisville residents saw average monthly temperatures at least 3 degrees warmer than usual in September, October and November, according to data from the National Weather Service in Louisville. The average November temperature of 53.6 degrees was more than 5 degrees above average.
