Fourteenth Street reconstruction project making progress

Must read

City crews are making headway on a reconstruction project along Fourteenth Street.

According to City of McAlester, the project entails a full reconstruction of Fourteenth Street from Delaware Avenue to Kiowa Avenue and will address “stormwater damage that compromised the roadway’s base and surface.”

The damage is a result of runoff water from an adjacent hillside that “eroded the foundation, forcing water between concrete and asphalt layers,” which ultimately caused the road to suffer from severe upheaval, according to the city.

The roadway is currently only open to local traffic within the affected block and all through traffic should use the detour, which routes traffic through Delaware Avenue, Thirteenth Street and Comanche Avenue.

“This is a full street rebuild — not a simple repair — so timelines may vary depending on weather, subgrade conditions and any unforeseen issues,” the city states. “We thank residents and drivers for their continued patience as this critical improvement project moves forward.”
