Man dies after found stabbed, driven to hospital by passerby in west Erie

Erie police are investigating the fatal stabbing of a man who was found wounded by a passerby in the south end of the city July 27.

The man, whose name was not released and who is believed to be in his 40s or 50s, was pronounced dead at 6:57 a.m. July 27 after he was taken to Saint Vincent Hospital, according to police and Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook.

Cook said an autopsy will be scheduled.

Erie police learned of the stabbing after officers were called to Saint VIncent Hospital on a report of a stabbing victim who was brought to the hospital by a citizen, Erie Police Chief Dan Spizarny said July 27. A passerby was traveling in the area of West 26th and Sassafras streets when the motorist spotted the victim in distress, picked him up and drove him to the hospital, according to Spizarny.

Additional details were not available on the incident July 27.

No suspects were reported to be in custody. Spizarny said detectives have been assisgned to the investigation.

If the man’s death is ruled a homicide following autopsy, it will be the fifth in Erie County and the fourth in the city so far this year.
