ST. LUCIE COUNTY − Two teens were arrested and two handguns recovered after sheriff’s deputies early July 27 responded to an incident involving gunfire, the agency stated.
A 17-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy, both of Fort Pierce, each face a number of charges including possession of a firearm by a juvenile, discharge of a firearm from a vehicle and tampering with evidence, the sheriff’s office stated on social media. No injuries were reported.
Deputies about 3:30 a.m. July 27 were in the area of North 29th Street and Avenue K, when they heard gunfire reported in the area of Pine Creek Village apartments, which are in the 1100 block of North 29th Street.
“Deputies observed a vehicle fleeing the scene at a high rate of speed and attempted a traffic stop,” the sheriff’s office stated. “The vehicle failed to yield, and a pursuit was initiated.”
As the pursuit continued, the 17-year-old girl exited the vehicle and fled on foot in the area of Boston Avenue and South 14th Street. Investigators reported apprehending her and recovering two handguns in the area.
The vehicle ultimately stopped on Mayflower Lane, and the driver, identified as the 16-year-old boy, was detained.

“Deputies observed spent shell casings and a bullet hole on the driver’s side of the vehicle,” the sheriff’s office stated.
Investigators reported finding cartridge casings at the original scene.
The teens were arrested and taken to a Department of Juvenile Justice facility.
