A freeway police chase started in New Mexico and continued across El Paso before ending in an arrest in the Eastlake area over the weekend, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said.

Javier Antonio Monzon, 32, of El Paso, was wanted in New Mexico in connection with a robbery and an aggravated fleeing charge, stated a sheriff’s news release by spokeswoman Priscilla I. Contreras.

El Paso County sheriff’s deputies joined the pursuit about 5:30 a.m. Friday, July 25, when New Mexico State Police and Anthony, New Mexico, police were pursuing Monzon in a vehicle heading east on Interstate 10, which crossed the state line into Texas, sheriff’s officials said.

Sheriff’s deputies and Precinct 1 Constable deputies assisted in stopping the vehicle on I-10 East near the Eastlake exit, sheriff’s officials stated.

Monzon was arrested on a felony charge of evading arrest in a vehicle and remains held on a $100,000 bond at the El Paso County Jail in Downtown as of Monday, July 28. He faces extradition to New Mexico.

Dog shot by El Paso police, officer bitten

A dog was fatally shot after biting an El Paso police officer during a family disturbance at a Lower Valley home last week, a police spokesman confirmed.

The officer-involved shooting took place about 6 p.m. on July 22 when police responded to a “verbal domestic violence call” in the 8800 block of Joe Kennedy Way, Officer Adrian Cisneros, a police spokesman, stated in an email.

An officer was bitten by a dog and fired his gun, killing the animal. The breed of dog was not specified in the police report, Cisneros said.

The officer was treated at a hospital for the dog bite, the Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas, CLEAT, the union that legally represents police, said on a post on X.

Crime of the Week: Shotgun-armed carjackers take vehicle

El Paso police seek to identify two men who used a shotgun in a carjacking on the West Side last month. The unsolved case is Crime Stoppers of El Paso’s Crime of the Week.

The victims allowed the two men into a car — a light blue 2008 Chrysler 300 — for unspecified reasons before the men brandished a shotgun and ordered them out of the car at 3 p.m. on June 19 at the intersection of El Camino Drive and Glendora Lane near Resler Drive, Crime Stoppers liaison Sgt. Javier Sambrano said in a news release. The carjackers left in the Chrysler.

Crime Stoppers said that investigators discovered one of the suspects was captured on security camera footage at a nearby convenience store. He was described as 5 feet, 10 inches tall, about 190 pounds with a medium build and a goatee. He wore a Mexico soccer jersey and blue basketball shorts.

The second man, who was wearing a hot pink T-shirt and denim shorts, was about the same height but was described as overweight with a beard and a tattoo on his right arm.

Anyone who can identify the carjackers may anonymously call Crime Stoppers of El Paso at 915-566-8477 (TIPS) or leave a tip online at cselpaso.org. Tipsters could be eligible for a cash reward if information leads to an arrest.
