A shooter has been neutralized in New York City after three individuals were harmed, per the New York Police Department on Monday, July 28.

PEOPLE can confirm that two individuals were shot along with one NYPD officer. Shots were fired near East 52nd Street between Park Avenue and Lexington Avenue. The incident took place in the lobby of 345 Park Ave in Midtown Manhattan, which serves as Blackstone Inc.’s headquarters. A source tells PEOPLE that the shooter allegedly shot himself on the 34th floor, but the scene remains active.

The shooter was allegedly wearing a bulletproof vest and may be armed with an AR-15. Approximately 100 people are reportedly sheltering in place or hiding from the gunman. The area is allegedly under lockdown as a massive NYPD response continues.

N.Y.C. Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch confirmed in a post on X, “UPDATE: At this time, the scene has been contained and the lone shooter has been neutralized.”

New York City Mayor Eric Adams previously confirmed “there is an active shooter investigation taking place in Midtown right now” in a post on X. ”Please take proper safety precautions if you are in vicinity and do not go outside if you are near Park Avenue and East 51st Street,” he wrote.

The FBI is responding to “provide support” at the “active crime scene,” according to an X post from Deputy Director Dan Bongino.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul shared the NYPD’s post on X, writing “I’ve been briefed on an active shooter situation in midtown Manhattan. Please avoid the area of 52nd St. between Park and 3rd Ave at this time.”
