Crews race to rescue worker trapped for hours in a hole at Goodyear construction site

Multiple Valley agencies were working to rescue an unresponsive man trapped in a hole at a Goodyear construction site, according to the Goodyear Fire Department.

A call came in around 1:10 p.m. July 28 about the worker who was stuck in a 6- to 7-foot hole near 183rd Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road, according to Glendale Fire Department spokesperson Ruben Real.

Real was not able to confirm if the man had died.

“Due to the complexity of the scene and safety concerns, we have not yet made physical contact with the individual involved,” Real said.

The Fire Department responded within six minutes of receiving the call, Real said. The Goodyear Police Department, Phoenix Fire Department’s technical rescue team, APS and Southwest Gas workers were also on hand to help with the rescue.

As crews kept digging, more dirt got inside the hole, according to Real. After 30 minutes, workers paused, and it turned from a rescue to a recovery, Real said.

Gas, water and communication lines below the hole made the process difficult, according to Real. Gas and water lines were either diverted or shut off, Real said.

The construction site was near single-family homes being built, but the type of construction the man was working on at the time of the accident was not known, Real said.
