William Breault, chief of police in Dover, New Hampshire, where he has worked since 1998, is slated to become the new police chief in South Burlington, Vermont, starting Oct. 6.
South Burlington announced the hire July 29 in a press release. Breault was named chief in Dover in spring 2018.
Breault holds a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice, a master of public administration, and is a 2018 graduate of the FBI’s National Academy.

In a prepared statement, Breault said he’s “honored” to accept the job in South Burlington, praising City Manager Jessie Baker and the city’s police staff.
“I am committed to fostering communication and collaboration within the community, aiming to reinforce the department’s role as a positive resource that continues to provide the high level of services that the community expects,” he said in part.
The release describes a hiring process that included a nationwide search and 14 applicants.

“Chief Breault represents the best of modern 21st century policing,” Baker said in a prepared statement. “His commitment to implementing best practices, leading an accredited department, and ensuring all neighbors feel welcome receiving public safety services stood out throughout the extensive process.”
Former South Burlington Police Chief Shawn Burke stepped down to serve as the interim chief of the Burlington Police Department, effective March 24.
