COURTESY CPHC The five day forecast for Henriette COURTESY CPHC The five day forecast for Henriette A high surf advisory for the south shores of all Hawaiian islands is in effect this weekend with waves of 10 to 14 feet expected, forecasters said.
The National Weather Service also issued a coastal flooding statement for all Hawaiian shores, and said “peak afternoon high tides, combined with elevated water levels running about a half a foot higher, will lead to minor flooding along most shorelines and low-lying coastal areas through today.”
The high surf advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Monday and the coastal flood statement is in effect through late Sunday but forecasters said, “water levels should fall below thresholds during peak afternoon high tides Sunday.”
The weather service warned of strong breaking waves and currents that will make swimming dangerous and flooding of beaches that are normally dry, minor coastal erosion, and saltwater inundation.
“Avoid driving through flooded roadways, ” forecasters said. “If you are forced to drive through salt water, be sure to rinse your vehicle with fresh water.”
The Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu, meanwhile, continues to monitor Tropical Depression Henriette as it moves northeast of the Hawaiian islands.
The storm had maximum sustained winds of 35 mph this morning about 550 miles east-northeast of Hilo and was moving west-northwest at 14 mph.
Henriette is expected to continue to moving northwest into next week, safely north of the islands. However, it is also forecast to regain tropical storm strength today through Wednesday before becoming a post-tropical remnant low far northwest of Hawaii.
The National Hurricane Center in Miami is also monitoring Tropical Storm Ivo south of Baja California but the system is expected to dissipate next week far from land in the East Pacific.
