HGTV named the best garden in Massachusetts. It’s not the one you’re thinking of.

Must read

HGTV just named the best garden in Massachusetts.

And it’s not Boston Public Garden. You may think that that’s a hot take from HGTV, but once you see their pick, you might change your mind.

The Home and Garden Television network named what they think is the best garden in every state in the United States and put them all in one list.

“We love gardens of all shapes and sizes (and know you do too!)” HGTV said. “And we just want to be sure you don’t miss any icons that could be right under your nose — or on your travel itinerary — when time is a finite resource.”

Here’s the Massachusetts garden HGTV called a must-visit.

The Mount, Edith Wharton’s home

HGTV chose The Mount as the best garden in Massachusetts because of how manicured and meticulously crafted the garden is, much like Edith Wharton’s prose in “The Age of Innocence.”

Here’s what HGTV said about it: “Literary inspiration blooms in these three acres of formal gardens designed by the Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist herself. Wharton applied the same principles of proportion and harmony to her landscapes as she did to her pioneering interior design work.”

You can find The Mount at 2 Plunkett St. in Lenox, Massachusetts.

“The Mount, built by Edith Wharton in 1902, is a historic house museum, cultural center, and public park,” The Mount website said. “We present over 100 programs year-round. The gardens and grounds are free and open daily from dawn to dusk.”

Praising the fall foliage of Lenox, Massachusetts, Reader’s Digest also recommended The Mount as a place to peep the autumn leaves.

If you’re looking for things to do at The Mount besides enjoying the pleasant scenery the garden provides, the house museum’s website talks about a guided tour of the garden and the house itself that begins at 1 p.m. Eastern Time daily.

“The gardens showcase Edith Wharton’s eye for beauty and design,” the website said. “Our guided garden tours highlight her original creation, as well as, the extensive restoration that brought these beautiful gardens back to life. “
