Detroit’s largest private residence is back on the market, this time at a steep discount.
The Bishop Mansion, a 35,029-square-foot estate in the Palmer Woods neighborhood, is listed for $1 million, down from its $9 million asking price in May 2023.
The Bishop’s Mansion at 19366 Lucerne in Detroit.
Built in the 1920s and was once owned by the Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit, and home to Catholic Bishop Michael Gallagher, the three-story brick and limestone residence sits on 2 acres at 19366 Lucerne.
The estate includes 12 bedrooms, eight full bathrooms, six half baths and a restored carriage house and garage, “a stunning example of what’s possible within the main home,” according to the listing.
Although in need of extensive renovations, the mansion showcases rare architectural details and retains much of its historic character. Among them are original stained glass windows, a private chapel, carved stonework, limestone fireplaces and intricate woodwork.
A 2024 YouTube video tour by Paul Wolfert, reveals both the property’s grandeur and its disrepair from intricate detailing in ceilings, vaults, unique craftmanship in rooms and around fireplaces, intercoms in walls, wood-paneled walls, hardwood floors, marble features, a large gutted kitchen area, dumbwaiters off of the kitchen, stained-glass windows in the chapel, an elevator shaft, wooden ceilings, exposed brick walls, wood planks in rooms, cement floors, open spaces plumbed for bathrooms, high ceilings, some damage to ceilings and walls, solid wood stairs and more.
According to the listing, strategic demolition has been completed to prepare for new HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems. Architectural plans are included in the sale, and all back taxes have been paid.

The Bishop Mansion has a storied ownership history. Once part of the Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit, it was sold in 1989 to Detroit Pistons star John Salley, then transferred in 1995 to Great Faith Ministries International. Bishop Wayne T. Jackson, founder and president of the Impact Network, sold the property to a California investor for more than $2.5 million in 2017.
The estate was slated for auction in June 2024 through Schrader Real Estate and Auction Co. Inc. of Indiana, using a sealed-bid format designed to protect buyer confidentiality, as told by the auction agent Luke Schrader in a Detroit Free Press article last year.
Public records show a warranty deed was recorded for the property on Oct. 28, 2024, with a sale price of $400.000.
