A Trenton man has been charged after illegally selling marijuana at his smoke shop in the city, the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office said.
The 32-year-old man is accused of running “Moe Weed,” an unlicensed dispensary on South Broad Street, authorities said.
He was arrested on Sept. 2 and charged with two counts of third-degree distribution of a controlled dangerous substance, the prosecutor’s office said.
The Mercer County Narcotics Task Force, the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice and the Trenton Police Department jointly conducted a two-month investigation.
According to the prosecutor’s office, authorities made multiple undercover purchases of marijuana during the investigation, seizing a total of six ounces with an estimated street value of $2,000.
The man told The Trentonian that he is suing the city of Trenton for damages after he was denied a cannabis license prior to the investigation.
“I did everything correctly,” he told the outlet. “The entire process. I had conditional cannabis license, approved from Trenton’s cannabis board, and approved for zoning.”
The man was charged in 2021 with first-degree manufacturing, distributing or possessing with the intent to distribute marijuana, online court records show.
Following his recent arrest, he was released from custody pending future appearances in court, authorities said.
“This operation should serve as a notice to unlicensed distributors who are illegally selling cannabis without complying with state standards and regulation,” Prosecutor Janetta D. Marbrey said in a news release.
“These dispensaries will be subject to investigation, which may result in the seizure of illegally sold marijuana and the arrest of individuals engaged in its sale without a license from the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission,” Marbrey said.
