A lost hiker was found dead in Oregon after he called his dad for help but lost the connection, news outlets reported from authorities.
His body was found the next day, Sept. 10, at the base of Wiesendanger Falls along the Larch Mountain Trail, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
The 49-year-old hiker had gone to Multnomah Falls the day before and called his dad at about 7 p.m. to say he was lost, MCSO spokesperson John Plock told KOIN.
“The dad got on his phone, brought up the map. He could see his son’s location on the map. And just from the map on his phone, he was … trying to help his son navigate his way down, and he lost connection,” Plock told the news outlet.
The man’s 73-year-old father then drove to the area to look for him that night, Plock told KPTV.
He couldn’t find him and reported his son missing the following morning, the news outlet reported.
But soon after, another person reported finding a body at the base of the waterfall, deputies said in the release.
Deputies confirmed to KGW the body belonged to the missing hiker.
Wiesendanger Falls is a 55-foot waterfall in the Columbia River Gorge, near Multnomah Falls.
Multnomah Falls is a 620-foot, two-tiered waterfall, making it the tallest waterfall in Oregon, according to Travel Portland.
The waterfall is about a 30-mile drive northeast from Portland.
