As temperatures warm, fog advisory issued for Milwaukee, Waukesha, Racine counties

Must read

As temperatures are rising after an abormally cool start to September, another foggy morning has hit southeast Wisconsin.

For the second morning in a row, the National Weather Service issued a dense fog advisory until 10 a.m. for a handful of counties: Milwaukee, Sheboygan, Washington, Ozaukee, Waukesha, Walworth, Racine and Kenosha.

J.J. Wood, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, said the fog Sept. 12 is concentrated slightly further west than it was Sept. 11, but remains with fluctuating visibility of around a quarter mile or less.

“We just urge people to slow down, use your low beam headlights, give extra stopping distance between you and the vehicle in front of you. That’s usually an important one, especially if you can’t see very far in front of you, it’s probably better to drive slower, just in case you need to break suddenly,” Wood said.

Wood said the fog should begin dissipating by mid-morning. If not totally gone by 10 a.m., the fog will be much lighter.

The foggy conditions are tied to a combination of warming temperatures, increasing moisture in the air and calm winds, Wood said.

After unseasonably cool temperatures last week, highs are returning to the mid- to upper-70s over the weeekend, and may reach low 80s at the start of next week.

“September starts getting into meteorological autumn, but it can still be a very summer-like month,” Wood said. “We were actually well below normal for temperatures, really, the first half of the month so far … so now we’re going to get a little on the warm side to kind of balance that out.”

Wood said there is not an expectation for any more widespread fog over the weekend, but southern Wisconsin may see some showers and thunderstorms overnight Friday, Sept 12 into Saturday, Sept. 13.
