Sep. 12—Superior: Author Joy Bashara visits the Superior Public Library at 10:30 a.m. She’ll talk about her memoir, “Blanketed in Truth,” about her time as an English teacher in Siberia.

Superior: Learn about traditional wild rice harvesting at 3 p.m. at the Pokegama Bay Boat Launch, park along Billings Drive. Lake Superior Reserve, the UWS Indigenous Cultures Resource Center, and the 1854 Treaty Authority host the event with stations showing how rice is dried, parched, hulled and winnowed.

Gordon: Friends of the Bird Sanctuary holds Barrens Fest at 11:30 a.m. at 12988 Bird Road. Presentations from Angela Botner about Dark Sky designation and Dr. Kim Amman of the Winged Freedom Raptor Hospital, lunch and music from Between Howls, and concluding with a hike on the North Country Trail.

Superior: A “Skills for Conversations about Public Policy and Race” program is 5-8 p.m. at the University of Wisconsin-Superior in the Yellowjacket Union Great Room. The free public event will “focus on understanding different perspectives on issues like affirmative action, policing, reparations and historical monuments,” and provide “tools for respectful dialogue,” according to a UWS press release. Superior: A Story Stitch by Green Card Voices program is 6:30-8 p.m. at the Superior-Douglas County YMCA. Facilitators will host conversations about racial, health and gender and sexuality equity. The event is part of

YMCA Welcoming Week.

Superior: Story time in Billings Park was extended through Oct. 14. At 10:30 a.m. Families with young children are invited to come to Pavilion 2 for stories, songs and crafts.

Superior: The Lew Martin Senior Center, 1527 Tower Ave., hosts an open house and resource fair 1-4 p.m. with the theme “Winter is Coming.” Food donations will also be accepted for the Northwest Wisconsin Community Services Agency food pantry and raffles will be held. Parking is available in back and on the street.

Superior: Superior Choice Credit Union’s rescheduled block party is 4-7 p.m. outside its branch at 2817 Tower Ave. The event includes a petting zoo and other children’s activities, and vendors and food trucks.

Solon Springs: The 16th annual Fall Equinox Festival is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. along East Main Street. The event includes a vendor fair, silent auction, food and music. Attendees are asked to bring a food shelf donation.

Solon Springs: The North Country Trail Association Brule-St. Croix Chapter hosts a 5-mile hike at 9 a.m. through in the Douglas County Wildlife Area. Meet at the U.S. Highway 53 trailhead.

Superior: A free ayurveda cooking class is 9-11 a.m. at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 820 Belknap St. Tanzeem Iqbal Ali teaches about food as medicine and shares simple recipes. RSVP at

Oakland: The Town of Oakland fall festival is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Town Hall, 6152 S. County Road K. The event includes a car show, petting zoo, chili cook-off, concessions, farmers market, games and music from Andy Hauswirth.

Maple: The Maple Memorial Cemetery Association holds its annual fundraiser dinner from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Maple Community Center, 11037 U.S. Highway 2. The menu includes pork loin, buns, potato salad, coleslaw, beans, salads, desserts and beverages. Cost is $15 for ages 13 and up, $8 for children ages 6-12, free for ages 5 and under. All funds raised go to maintenance and improvement of the cemetery grounds.

Lakeside: The Old Brule Heritage Society hosts tours of the Davidson Windmill, Eskolin log house, sauna, Taylor’s Bridge and old Blueberry Depot from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 7890 Old Highway 13.

Superior: The University of Wisconsin-Superior Music Department kicks off it’s two-day alumni reunion with a free concert at 7:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of Christ the King. The UWS band, orchestra, choir, percussion ensemble and mall groups and soloists will perform. A new composition by alums David Packa and text by staff member Jade Marielan will make its debut.
