Rep. Cory Mills wants to create border wall monument honoring Trump

Must read

U.S. Rep. Cory Mills, who’s been beset with legal and ethical troubles, is looking ahead at not just a completed Southern Border Wall but a gleaming new monument to go along with it.

Mills, a Republican who represents Florida’s 7th District, introduced a bill this week he’s calling “The DON-ument Act.” Rep. Barry Moore of Alabama, also a Republican, has cosponsored the bill.

What is THE DON-ument Act?

“I’m proud to introduce THE DON-ument Act, a tribute to President Trump’s commitment to securing our southern border and protecting America’s sovereignty,” Mills said in a statement provided by his office. “This Southern Border Wall National Monument, spanning California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, stands as a powerful symbol of our mission to stop illegal crossings and defend our nation’s interests.”

Mills said the border wall’s place in history should stand next to one of America’s symbols that has welcomed immigrants crossing the Atlantic Ocean since 1886.

“By enshrining the wall alongside historic sites like The Statue of Liberty and Fort McHenry, we honor the America First principles that keep our communities safe and strong,” he said.

“No president in our lifetime has cared more about securing our borders, protecting our citizens, and supporting our law enforcement,” Mills said in a post on X. “That’s why it will be named after @POTUS, President Trump.”

Trump’s face on Mount Rushmore?

The bill was introduced on Sept. 10 and referred to the House Committee on Natural Resources. The cost of such a monument has not been provided, and the bill text was not available.

This is not the first time a member of Congress has proposed a bill to honor Trump with a monument. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., wants to carve Trump into Mount Rushmore, according to USA Today. Other Republican bills would name Dulles International Airport after Trump and print $500 bills with his portrait on them.

Mills, who has previously been endorsed by Trump, is scheduled to return to a Columbia County Courthouse on Sept. 26. His ex-girlfriend is seeking an order of protection against stalking. Mills testified in that matter on Sept. 5, but time constraints prevented the hearing’s conclusion that day.

Mills also was investigated, but not charged, in a February assault complaint in Washington, D.C., made by a different “significant other,” while the House Committee on Ethics is looking into questions about his financial disclosure and campaign spending.

His Democratic rivals have called on him to resign, while one of his congressional colleagues, also a Democrat, introduced a measure aiming to censure him.
