Louisville officials are expressing concerns over anticipated traffic throughout the city on Saturday, Sept. 20, with three large events taking place at or near the Kentucky Exposition Center.
In addition to Louder Than Life, which is recognized as “America’s loudest rock and metal festival,” University of Louisville’s football team will face off against Bowling Green State University at noon at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium and Churchill Downs will be hosting races at the track.
Mayor Craig Greenberg said in a news conference on Sept. 18 that Saturday, Sept. 20, will be the busiest traffic day during the music festival for Louisville with three major events taking place “within just a short few blocks” of each other.
“Louder Than Life is not the only thing that’s going on around town this weekend in the vicinity of where Louder Than Life is happening out at the Kentucky Fairgrounds,” Greenberg said. “There are going to be nearly 150,000 people within this small part of our city, that are going to and from these wonderful events, and so we want people to take precaution, to plan ahead, because we know there’s going to be traffic.”
Louisville Metro Police Major Luke Phan said that while Bourbon & Beyond was a success, higher turnouts are expected for Louder Than Life and heavy traffic is expected at the end of the night with most of the crowd leaving the music festival after the headliners.
“We’ve assessed our operations from last week and we’ve determined that we will need more officers to man different traffic points and to reroute certain traffic flow to assist with congestion,” Phan said. “When everyone leaves at once, waiting in traffic is going to be unavoidable. Parking will be especially challenging on Saturday with the UofL game and of course, the race at Churchill Downs.”
