Dollar General, the budget-friendly convenience and grocery store chain that competes with Dollar Tree and Family Dollar, has almost simultaneously announced the opening — and closing — of hundreds of stores across the country.
Such activity could confuse Dollar General shoppers in New Jersey and elsewhere, who are unsure if their store is on the list to close or not.

How many Dollar General stores are in New Jersey?
There are 197 Dollar General stores in New Jersey, according to Statista, making Dollar General the 17th-largest retailer in the Garden State.
Dollar General and its offshoot DG Market have been positioning for a bigger share of grocery shoppers in New Jersey. Based on the company’s SEC filings on store counts and sales mix, and USDA Economic Research Service data, Dollar General owns about 1 percent of grocery sales in New Jersey.

Are Dollar General stores closing?
Dollar General announced in May that 96 stores would close by January 2026.
While Dollar General didn’t disclose the locations of the DG stores to close, it’s possible that a few in New Jersey could close.
Are any new Dollar General stores opening in New Jersey?
Dollar General also confirmed in its public financial disclosure it will open 575 before the end of the current fiscal year.
Similar to the list of closings, Dollar General hasn’t specified where these new DG stores will open, but published reports confirmed Dollar General’s expansion plans.
Dollar General opened two new locations in New Jersey in 2024.
