New York Times reporter David Gelles asked an audience not to boo or heckle Secretary of Energy Chris Wright during a live interview on Wednesday.
“Thank you, Secretary Wright, for being here. Before we begin, I just want to note at the very top of the day that I made a note to the audience that we were here to engage in respectful dialogue, and I just want to reiterate that,” said Gelles at the beginning of the interview. “There was a lot of cheering for the last session and I know emotions are high.”
He then warned the audience, “You may not agree with everything you hear during this conversation, but I ask everyone to really allow us to have the space to have a respectful and honest dialogue. With that, let us begin.”
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) had been interviewed on-stage directly before Wright and was repeatedly cheered by the audience.
“I know Chris is coming up next and, well, he’s gotta defend himself, not just Trump. What an abomination. What an embarrassment,” said Newsom on the Trump administration’s climate policies as the audience erupted into cheers and applause.
Steve Guest, a former communications official for the Republican National Committee (RNC) and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), mocked Gelles’ disclaimer at the beginning of Wright’s interview on social media, likening it to a “trigger warning.”
