Grand Forks police do not suspect foul play in death of woman found in Red River

Must read

Sep. 25—GRAND FORKS — The deceased woman found in the Red River in Grand Forks has been identified, and preliminary investigation results do not indicate any foul play in her cause of death, according to police.

A passerby reported seeing a body at 12:28 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, approximately 200 yards north of the Riverside Dam boat ramp, according to a press release issued by the Grand Forks Police Department.

The woman’s body was removed from the river and, over the next few days, law enforcement worked to identify her and her cause of death.

The death was treated as “suspicious,”

which Lt. Andrew Stein told the Grand Forks Herald can mean a number of things.

It’s generally out of the ordinary to find a body in the river, so detectives consider a range of possibilities — including homicide, but also an accident or suicide, Stein said.

An updated press release, issued Thursday morning, Sept. 25, says the GFPD and Grand Forks coroner have identified the woman and notified her relatives. Her name will not be released until Friday, Sept. 26, so that her family has time to contact other relatives, the release said.

Preliminary results of the investigation do not indicate any foul play or concern to the public, according to the release.

Anyone with information that may assist the investigation can contact the GFPD at (701) 787-8000, or by submitting a tip on the GFPD Facebook page, website or through the Tip411 app.
