Must read

Both spans of the Skinners Falls Bridge have come down.

The span closer to Pennsylvania came down at 10:28 a.m. April 21, with a couple nudges from one of the machines on site.

The side closer to New York had been torn down four days earlier. The bridge over the Delaware River connected Milanville, Pennsylvania, and Skinners Falls, New York.

“The decision to remove the bridge comes after inspections revealed critical structural failures,” the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said in an April 16 press release announcing when removal would begin. “An October 2024 inspection showed the bridge superstructure in a critical condition, and the substructure had failed. A subsequent inspection in January 2025 confirmed active movement in the New York abutment and upstream truss bearing areas. To prevent an uncontrolled collapse and ensure public safety, demolition is necessary.”

The demolition was delayed due to a federal lawsuit filed by Damascus Citizens for Sustainability and Milanville resident Cynthia Nash.

U.S. District Judge Karoline Mehalchick issued a ruling April 15 denying their request to stop the imminent demolition of the bridge. The judge issued a temporary injunction April 9 to stop the demolition, which was initially expected the next day.
