A court in the southern German city of Munich sentenced an alleged left-wing extremist to five years in prison on Friday for grievous bodily harm, among other charges.
The court ruled that the woman, identified only as Hanna S under German privacy rules, was involved in attacks on alleged right-wing extremists in Budapest.
The sentence is notably lower than the nine-year term for attempted murder sought by prosecutors, and can be appealed. The defence had called for an acquittal and compensation for the time Hanna spent in custody.
She had been on trial in Munich since February and accused of belonging to a group that plotted violent attacks on European neo-Nazis who gathered in Budapest in February 2023 for an annual commemoration of the Nazis and their Hungarian fascist collaborators.
Defence lawyer Yunus Ziyal described the event at the start of the trial as a “neo-Nazi showcase” and “currently the largest mass event of the extreme right.”
Hanna S was accused of participating in two attacks in Budapest in which batons, a hammer and pepper spray were used. In the first attack, a man suffered serious head wounds, while the second mainly resulted in bruises and lacerations.
The presiding judge described the incidents as a “manhunt” that could not be justified, even if authorities were perceived as doing too little to combat right-wing extremism.
Before the judgement, supporters of Hanna S demonstrated in front of the Stadelheim prison, where the trial took place in a high-security room.
