A 32-year-old man was on probation and left a drug treatment facility before he was arrested for allegedly beating a 65-year-old man with a brick, taking his belongings and leaving him bleeding on a mattress in Waikiki on Tuesday.
Cody Allen Lucas was on probation for assaulting a Hawaii Police Department officer in September 2024 when it was revoked March 18 after he broke into a car, according to state court records.
He was arrested in Kaneohe on Wednesday afternoon on suspicion of attempted murder and robbery in connection with the Tuesday attack in Waikiki. A probation officer with the Kona Adult Client Services Branch office filed a motion Thursday to revoke Lucas’ probation.
Lucas was originally sentenced to a year in prison with credit for 22 days served, and five years of probation for attacking the Hawaii police officer, after pleading no contest.
Lucas was also charged with breaking into a car, attempted car theft, trespassing and fourth-degree theft in connection with a series of crimes in Kona in January. He was sentenced to a year in prison, with credit for 22 days served, and four years of probation.
Lucas was also ordered to write apology letters to the three victims in that case.
Lucas was locked up at the Halawa Correctional Facility until bed space opened up at the Habilitat alcohol and drug treatment center in Kaneohe on Aug. 29.
On Sept. 15, the Habilitat staff notified Lucas’ probation officer that he was terminated from the program.
“I want to leave the program before I do something stupid, ” Lucas allegedly wrote, according to state court records.
Lucas became incoherent and it became “apparent that he did not want to be at the program. He was discharged from the program and taken to Castle Hospital, ” according to state court records.
It is not immediately clear how Lucas got out of Adventist Health Castle hospital.
He had a March 18 felony conviction for car theft and a Jan. 22 felony conviction for assaulting a law enforcement officer, according to the Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center.
In June 2024 he was convicted of misdemeanor contempt for missing a court date, another misdemeanor for obstructing a public highway and misdemeanor theft.
In September 2013 he was convicted of misdemeanor assault for attacking his ex-girlfriend and her father in their home.
At one point during the attack, he threw a television stand at his ex-girlfriend’s father and hit her in the face with a forearm, according to state court records.
On Sept. 23, shortly before 5 a.m., District 6 Honolulu Police Department patrol officers responded to a bus stop at Kuhio and Paoakalani avenues and found the 65-year-old man lying on a mattress, bleeding from his head.
“A brick was found nearby and is believed to have been used in the assault. The male victim was treated and transported to an area hospital, where he remains in critical condition, ” read a statement from the Honolulu Police Department.
Lucas allegedly hit the 65-year-old “multiple times in the head with the brick ” and then stole his belongings. The 32-year-old was booked on suspicion of attempted murder and robbery in the first degree about 1 :15 p.m.
District 4 Community Policing Team members in Kaneohe, while “investigating an unrelated criminal offense, ” car theft, identified Lucas. Charges will be sought with the Department of the Prosecuting Attorney, police said.
Lucas was also arrested Wednesday on suspicion of first-degree car theft by HPD officers, according to state court records.
On Jan. 22, a Hawaiian Ocean View Estates man told Hawaii Police Department officers that at 6 :50 a.m. he found Lucas on his Catamaran Lane property rummaging through his car, according to state court records.
When he was confronted by the owner of the home and car, Lucas apologized and returned a folding knife and facial mask he stole from the center console. He told police that he was in the car looking for the man’s keys so he could drive away.
