Colorado’s worst drivers are in Lakewood, Fort Collins and Arvada, according to a new survey of more than 3,000 truck drivers nationally.
The survey by American River Wellness, a firm that helps employees return to full duty after violating Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing rules, is highly subjective, of course. And all rankings are relative.
Colorado drivers actually fare well compared to the rest of the country in the survey. Even the supposed worst drivers in Lakewood are better than those in more than 70% of the cities ranked.
Some of the survey’s findings also fly in the face of other research on driver safety. For example, Allstate does an annual report on America’s best drivers, using insurance claim data to rank the 200 largest cities in the U.S. for their likelihood of having a collision. Fort Collins and Lakewood were recognized by Allstate as the two safest cities in Colorado in that study.
Denver was among the safest cities nationally in the trucker survey but was ranked on the riskier side by Allstate. The survey said the most dangerous drivers nationally were in New York, Los Angeles and Atlanta.
In the survey, truckers criticized Front Range drivers for being overly aggressive, not leaving adequate room for trailers to stop and boxing in trucks so they can’t change lanes safely.
