As Wisconsin’s typical tornado season winds down, 2025 is tied for the sixth most tornadoes in state history since 1950.
According to data from the National Weather Service last updated on Sept. 11, Wisconsin has recorded 38 tornadoes across eight days.
That includes seven tornadoes in April, 15 in March, four in June, 11 in July and one in August.
On average, Wisconsin experiences about 23 tornadoes in a year. Wisconsin hit that average before July even started.
According to NWS data, tornadoes have caused no fatalities in Wisconsin this year. Only one injury was reported, associated with an EF2 tornado in Juneau in May.
Wisconsin recorded four EF2 tornadoes this year, characterized by gusts of 111 to 135 miles per hour.
All four occurred during the May 15 storms, when 15 total tornadoes touched down in western and central Wisconsin. Here’s a look at those EF2 twisters:
New Richmond in St. Croix County: Traveled 3.94 miles, reached a width of 120 yards.
Colby in Clark/Marathon Counties: Traveled 4.78 miles, reached a width of 150 yards.
Juneau in Dodge County: Traveled 11.8 miles, reached a width of 150 yards.
Mayville in Dodge County: Traveled 8.7 miles, reached a width of 300 yards.
Wisconsin has recorded 38 tornadoes across eight days in 2025, as of Sept. 11, according to the National Weather Service. That’s about 15 more than normal.
Have tornadoes ever happened in winter in Wisconsin?
Peak tornado season in Wisconsin runs from April to August, but they can happen any time of the year.
That means more tornadoes could still occur and be added to the 2025 total.
The last time Wisconsin had an October tornado was in 2022, when seven occurred on Oct. 12 in southeastern Wisconsin. Some hit close to Milwaukee, including an EF0 in West Allis.
Wisconsin also had two October tornadoes in 2019.

Winter tornadoes are unusual, but Wisconsin recorded ten tornadoes on Dec. 15 in 2021, prompted by a massive windstorm.
On March 31, 2023, Wisconsin experienced 15 tornadoes across the southern part of the state.
And in 2024, two tornadoes hit Wisconsin in February, the first time the weather phenomenon occurred in that month in state history.
