Rochester joins national effort to go car-free for a week

Must read

Reconnect Rochester invites Monroe County residents to participate in its initiative for the National Week Without Driving.

The Week Without Driving was first launched by Disability Rights Washington in 2021 to highlight the challenges individuals that don’t have car access face. By 2023, individuals across the country began to participate in the week-long challenge.

“The average commute in Rochester is 4.1 miles; a very doable distance for your average cyclist or a quick bus trip,” says Chaz Goodman, marketing manager at Reconnect Rochester.

“Nationwide 40% of car trips are less than 2 miles with 28% less than one mile. Leaving your car at home may be easier than the average person realizes. Many people (including a quarter of Rochester residents and 11% of Monroe County) get by every day without a car. We’re trying to inspire people to rethink what’s possible in their own travels,’ said Goodman.

The initiative will begin on Monday, September 29 until Sunday, October 5.

Reconnect Rochester invites residents to track their non-driving miles throughout the week to show the collective impact of reducing vehicle use. Participants will receive daily emails with guidance and mini challenges to win prizes.

Each day will highlight different mobility options, including walking, biking, bus, and e-scooters. Participants are encouraged to choose the method that works best for their travel and schedule.

Why reduce car use?

According to Reconnect Rochester, reducing reliance on driving can have a range of impacts, including:

  • Lower transportation costs for households

  • Reduced traffic congestion

  • Less demand for roadway and parking infrastructure

  • Supports safer streets and more efficient use of community space
