As summer arrives, Dayton police and troopers are speaking on the dangers of distracted driving.

Sgt. Gordon Cairns with the Dayton Police Department said that almost 3,300 people died in distracted driving crashes nationwide last year.
“Those distracted driving crashes are extremely preventable, and it just takes someone paying attention to what they’re doing,” Cairns said.

A trooper in Montgomery County had a big rig driver cut into his lane and force him to the shoulder before the trooper put on his emergency lights.
In Mercer County, a truck driver was so distracted that he crossed the center line and almost hit a trooper head-on.
“It just takes that one time when you look down and don’t notice the car in front of you,” Cairns said.
