Apr. 22—DULUTH — The 559th and final concrete beam of the Twin Ports Interchange project was set in the Lincoln Park neighborhood Tuesday.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation said in a news release that the concrete beam’s placement marks a “major milestone” in the interchange reconstruction, which also included 92 steel beams, for a total of 651 beams.
MnDOT invites the public to a virtual meeting about the interchange Monday at 12:15 p.m. The project’s staff will provide updates and answer questions. Access the meeting at

Prep work started in 2020
on the
$435 million reconstruction
of the “can of worms” section of Interstate 35 through Duluth, which eliminates blind merges and left exits; replaces aging infrastructure; and improves freight mobility.
Most work has been completed: Interstate 35, U.S. Highway 53/Piedmont Avenue to 21st Avenue West, and I-535, except a temporary bypass at the Garfield Avenue interchange.
The remainder of the Highway 53 bridges, including ramps to and from I-35 and I-535, are scheduled for completion in fall 2025.
MnDOT expects to finish the project in summer 2026 with landscaping and cleanup.
