Edgewater officials estimate floodwaters entered about 30 homes Friday

Must read

Edgewater officials estimated that floodwaters entered approximately 30 homes in the city on Friday, Oct. 10, after the town was drenched with seven inches of rain and hammered by unusually high tides.

The city released more information Friday about the extent of the damage. The trouble started after the National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning. A stalled weather system was responsible for the rain, according to the city.

The intense rainfall combined with already-saturated ground, and the King Tide – an especially high tide that occurs during a full moon led to the flooding. The high tide reduced drainage capacity and the efficiency of the stormwater system, according to the city.

City employees across all departments worked together to minimize the effects of the flooding, according to a release. Workers used large pumps and vacuum trucks to clear inlets, canals, culverts, and swales.

Multiple roadways were flooded, mainly concentrated within Florida Shores and surrounding low-lying areas. The Public Works Department pumped the 18th Street canal to help clear stormwater.

Numerous properties reported water intrusion. To find out where they are, the city set up this link. Residents can also email Miron San Miguel at sanmiguel@cityofedgewater.org.

Residents are reminded that flooding may persist or worsen with additional rainfall or continued high tides over the coming days.
