Must read

What holiday is Monday, Oct. 13? Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day are observed on the second Monday of October, prompting closures to banks, post offices, and more on a day where the founding history of the United States is celebrated by some, and scrutinized by others.

In 2021, former President Joe Biden made history with his recognition of Indigenous Peoples’ Day. But it isn’t a federal holiday. Columbus Day is a celebration that dates back over two centuries in America, according to the Library of Congress.

Is it still called Columbus Day? Was Columbus Day renamed?

Columbus Day is a federal holiday commemorating Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the “New World.” The 15th-century Italian-born explorer is often credited with founding or discovering the Americas, even though Indigenous peoples already inhabited these lands. The day has also been one to celebrate Italian-American heritage, according to History.com.

The holiday’s name hasn’t changed, but some states and communities will celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day on the same day instead. The National Museum of the American Indian said the celebration of Columbus and other explorers like him “dismisses the devastating losses experienced by Indigenous Peoples of the Western Hemisphere in the past and the ongoing effects of colonialism today.”

“We must never forget the centuries-long campaign of violence, displacement, assimilation, and terror wrought upon Native communities and Tribal Nations throughout our country,” Biden’s Indigenous Peoples’ Day proclamation in 2021 read. “Today, we acknowledge the significant sacrifices made by Native peoples to this country — and recognize their many ongoing contributions to our Nation.”
