All-day precipitation and periods of a slushy rain-snow mix are expected in the Milwaukee area on Wednesday.
Rain-snow mix is most likely in the morning and evening hours, when temperatures are expected to be below freezing. Less than 0.5 inches of slushy accumulations are possible on grassy surfaces in southeastern and east-central Wisconsin, the National Weather Service says.
“We’re looking at potential for two windows of some light rain-snow mix, otherwise it’ll just be rain,” said Milwaukee-Sullivan NWS meteorologist Andrew Quigley. “6 to 10 a.m. is going to be the first window … and then 6 to 10 p.m.”
Milwaukee is expected to see an afternoon high of 42 degrees on Wednesday, with wind chills making it feel like the upper 30s. Morning temperatures will be in the low 30s, with wind chills feeling like below freezing until about 9 a.m. Rain chances are highest between 1 and 6 p.m.
Currently, the weather service is not concerned about “major impacts” from the rain-snow mix, Quigley said.
“Road temps will be pretty warm, so any sort of very minor accumulation that would occur will melt very quickly because we’ll have temperatures climbing above freezing by mid-morning,” he said.
He added that some “nuisance, minor impacts” can’t be ruled out in the evening. Evening accumulations on grassy surfaces could stick around for an hour or two before melting. For travelers, reduced visibility and wet spots on the road are possible, Quigley said.
Rain chances continue into early Thursday morning, tapering off by 7 a.m. Things should be dry by the afternoon. Clear skies are expected through the weekend.
Temperatures will climb to the upper 40s by Friday afternoon and into the mid-50s on Saturday. A high of 62 is in the forecast for Sunday.
